“She called just to chat. Not to check. Just to chat.”
What changes when the people you love stop worrying
When the people who love you already know you’re okay, something shifts.
The calls go back to being just calls. The visits go back to being just visits.
And you go back to being someone they love — not someone they worry about.
That’s what OurGrapeVine makes possible. Not by watching over you.
But by giving the people in your life the one thing they need —
quiet, continuous reassurance that you’re fine.
That reassurance doesn’t happen by accident.
OurGrapeVine uses the smart meter already in your home to build a quiet picture of daily life — the kettle in the morning, the television in the evening, the gentle rhythm of a day going about itself. Not perfectly. Not without the usual ups and downs. Just normally.
You don’t have to think about it. Your home provides the reassurance continuously, quietly, in the background. And when the people who love you have it — really have it — everything changes.
Here’s what becomes possible
On your terms. With the people you choose. From the home you love.
Most people who live alone carry a small background awareness — that if something happened, there’d be no one there to notice. OurGrapeVine quietly removes that concern. Not with drama, not with devices — just the knowledge that your home is keeping the people who care about you gently in the picture.
You decide who stays in the picture, what they can see, and when they hear from OurGrapeVine. This isn’t surveillance. It’s you choosing to share just enough — with exactly the right people — so that everyone can get on with life.
When your daughter calls, it’s because she wants to talk. When your son visits, it’s just a visit. The check-ins, the welfare calls, the guilt on both sides — quietly gone. Things go back to being what they should always have been.
OurGrapeVine takes minutes to set up — then runs quietly in the background, from that day on.
Quick sign-up with your email. No technical knowledge needed, no complicated setup.
Invite the people you’d like to stay gently connected with. You’re in control of who’s included and what they see.
Decide how much your circle sees and when they hear from OurGrapeVine. You can change this at any time.
OurGrapeVine isn’t just for families. It’s for anyone who lives alone and has people who care — neighbours, old friends, former colleagues. People who’d want to know if something wasn’t right, but who also deeply respect each other’s space and independence.
“We keep an eye out for each other. Nobody had to ask.”
A small group of friends, all living alone, all in each other’s circles. Not checking up. Not interfering. Just quietly there — the way good neighbours always used to be, before everyone got so busy.
Think about who already worries about you.
A friend who always checks in. A neighbour who notices when your light isn’t on. A sibling who calls too often, just to be sure. OurGrapeVine gives all of them — and you — something better than a phone call.
Build your circleMost people who care for someone at a distance manage it with phone calls — a check-in on the way to work, a duty visit at the weekend. OurGrapeVine makes that unnecessary. Not by replacing those calls, but by making them about something other than checking.
Caseloads are large and resources are finite. OurGrapeVine gives professional care teams a continuous, objective picture of how each person is functioning at home — so time and attention can be directed where they are actually needed.
Know which clients are showing signs of change and which are stable — before you make a single call. OurGrapeVine gives you an objective daily signal for every person on your caseload, so you can start each day knowing where attention is most needed.
When you know who is coping well and who isn’t, you can allocate contact time and visits accordingly. Routine check-ins for stable clients give way to more meaningful time with those whose pattern is shifting — care that is proportionate, not just scheduled.
Capacity freed from routine welfare checking can be redirected to clients who need active support. Teams that use OurGrapeVine alongside their caseload are able to hold more clients with greater confidence — without compromising on the quality of care where it matters most.
Get in touch
We’d welcome the chance to talk about how OurGrapeVine could work in your setting — whether that’s a family situation, a care service, or a wider professional context.
Everything you might want to know before you get started.
No. OurGrapeVine is not a falls alarm and does not detect falls or medical emergencies. It monitors patterns of everyday activity — things like when the kettle goes on or appliances are used — and alerts your circle if those patterns change in a way that might warrant a check-in.
If you need a falls alarm or emergency response service, please look for a dedicated personal alarm provider.
It can play a part. A gradual change in daily routine — later mornings, less activity, lower overall consumption — can be an early signal that something is not quite right. OurGrapeVine tracks these patterns over time and can alert you when they shift meaningfully.
However, there is no substitute for visiting and checking in person if you are concerned about someone’s wellbeing. OurGrapeVine is designed to give you an informed reason to reach out — not to replace human contact.
OurGrapeVine reads electricity consumption data from a smart meter, updated every 30 minutes. It looks at the pattern of activity through the day — when consumption first picks up in the morning, how much is used, and whether those patterns are consistent with the person’s normal routine.
It does not monitor specific appliances, movements, or rooms. It sees the household’s overall electricity use, which is enough to detect whether the day is unfolding normally.
Yes — and this is one of the things people love most about OurGrapeVine. If you and a friend both use OurGrapeVine, you can each add the other to your circles. You look out for them; they look out for you. Nobody asks, nobody intrudes. It just happens, quietly.
Groups of friends, neighbours, or former colleagues all living alone can create a genuine mutual support network — without anyone ever having to ask “are you okay?”
No. Nobody in your circle can see specific appliances, movements, or activities. They only ever receive a notification if your day looks unusual — and even then, the notification simply says that your pattern has changed, not what you’re doing.
On a normal day, they hear nothing at all. That silence is the reassurance. Your privacy is completely intact.
Signing up takes a few minutes. However, there is a short delay before the service becomes fully active — data typically takes up to 24 hours to become available after you connect your smart meter account.
Once the data starts flowing, the dashboard begins building a picture of normal activity. After a few weeks, the pattern recognition becomes progressively more accurate as it learns what a typical day looks like.
Yes. OurGrapeVine depends on half-hourly electricity consumption data, which is only available through a smart meter.
If you do not have a smart meter installed, you will need to contact your energy supplier to arrange one. Smart meter installation is typically free of charge and your supplier is obliged to offer one.
Not at all. You need a smart meter and you need to give permission for your energy data to be shared with us. Beyond that, the service runs quietly in the background — there is nothing to wear, charge, or remember.
Many people find this preferable to more intrusive monitoring options.
Notifications are sent when activity falls outside your normal pattern in a way that may be significant. This includes:
No morning activity — no sign of the day starting by a time you set.
Unusually low consumption — the day’s total is well below what is normal for that day of the week.
Declining pattern — activity has been gradually getting later or reducing over several consecutive days.
You can configure the thresholds and suppress notifications on specific days — for example if you regularly go out on a particular day.
You can include multiple contacts — family members, friends, or carers — who will all receive the same notifications. This means no single person carries the responsibility alone.
Contacts are added through the dashboard and can be removed at any time.
You can pause notifications for a set period directly from the dashboard. This prevents alerts firing when your absence is planned and expected.
Yes. Your energy data is only visible to you and the contacts you have explicitly added. Data is never shared with third parties or used for advertising.
The service sees aggregate consumption data — how much electricity is being used — not which specific appliances are on or what you are doing.
